He was a city Councilman from 1981-1983, serving as Chair of the DPW Committee and the Land Use and Building Management Committee. He served on two separate Revaluation Taskforces, and on the Board of Estimate and Taxation of the City of Norwalk from 1999 to 2005.
In Rowayton, Mr. Avery served on the Rowayton Civic Association, the Emig Foundation, and Preserve the Wetlands in the 1980's, and as a Commissioner of the Sixth Taxing District (Rowayton) from 1990 to 1999. He is a member of the Rowayton United Methodist Church.
